How to Mute Zoom: Shortcuts, Push-to-Talk & Fixes

- Click or tap it to mute. A red diagonal line crosses the icon, and a small red microphone appears in the corner of your video tile. Trust the tile, not your memory.
- Use the keyboard instead. Alt + A on Windows and Linux, Cmd + Shift + A on macOS. Both toggle, so one key combination does mute and unmute.
- Make it global if you want. Under Settings → Keyboard shortcuts, tick the box beside a shortcut and it fires even when Zoom isn't in focus — handy while presenting.
- Check the result, not the button. If you unmute and get silence, the button almost certainly isn't the problem. Skip to the section on why unmute fails.

Hold the spacebar, say your bit, let go
Push-to-talk is the best habit on this page and roughly nobody has it on. You stay muted permanently, hold the spacebar while you speak, and the moment you let go you're muted again. No two-minute monologue into a dead microphone.
Enable it under Settings → Audio; the checkbox reads Press and hold "Space" key to temporarily unmute. In a call, Zoom flashes a banner while you're temporarily unmuted and the microphone glows green. One catch: the Zoom window has to be in focus, or the spacebar just types a space.

Join every meeting muted, by default
This is the setting that spares everyone else your kettle. In the desktop app, click your profile picture, open Settings → Meetings & webinars, and switch on Keep my microphone muted under When joining meetings and webinars.
On Android the toggle is Settings → Meetings → Always Mute My Microphone; on iOS, Mute My Microphone. The join screen also carries a Don't connect to audio checkbox for one-off silence.
Muting other people when you're the host
Open the participants panel and everything is there. Hover a name for Mute, or Ask to Unmute, which prompts that person rather than opening their microphone. Mute all sits at the foot of the list, with Mute all upon entry and Ask all to unmute behind More.
The checkbox that matters appears after you click Mute all: Allow participants to unmute themselves. Leave it ticked for a normal meeting. Clear it and the room stays silenced — right for a 300-person town hall, needlessly authoritarian for a stand-up.
Hosts cannot force anyone's microphone open. Zoom treats that as a privacy line. The Unmute option appears only for people who gave pre-approved consent, which happens when a meeting is scheduled with Request permission to unmute participants ticked.
That consent carries into the same host's later meetings. Revoke it under Settings → Audio → People who can unmute you → Manage.
When the unmute button won't work
Four causes, most likely first.
- The host silenced the room. If Allow participants to unmute themselves was cleared, unmuting shows a notice saying the host isn't allowing it. Raise your hand; push-to-talk won't get round it.
- A hardware mute is on. Inline switches on headset cables, the button on a USB speakerphone and the mute key on many laptop function rows sit outside Zoom. The app shows you unmuted while the hardware swallows your voice.
- The wrong microphone is selected. Click the arrow beside the microphone icon and check Select a Microphone. Docks, monitors and freshly-paired earbuds all grab the default.
- You never joined the audio. If the toolbar shows Join Audio rather than a microphone, you're in the meeting visually but not acoustically.

The mute nobody can see
Headsets create two mute states and only one is visible to the meeting. Most business models mute themselves when you flip the boom arm up, often with a tone only you hear. Zoom's icon doesn't change, so you sit there unmuted in the app and silent in the room.
The reverse happens too: you press the physical button while Zoom's mute is still on, and speak into two layers of silence. Fix both the same way — pick one mute and use only that one.
